MY Neighbors News as of October 3, 2017

Happy autumn my friends.  A quick update from MY Neighbors:

As of today’s writing, 38 Volunteers are providing services to 45 Members.  This week we are orienting a couple of new Volunteers and a new Call Manager.   We are currently accepting both new Members and Volunteers.  If interested call or email us

Since opening in May we have filled 173 service requests.  Approximately 64% of these have been for transportation, mostly rides to and from the Burnsville area.

The pace of service requests is slow but steady.  (Members, please don't hesitate to call us if we can help you!)  Thanks to our wonderful group of Volunteers, the Call Managers are typically able to fill requests within 24 hours of receiving them.  However, we still ask our Members to give us at least several days’ lead time on service requests; a week or more in advance is ideal.

Next Monday, October 9th, we are partnering with the local MemoryCare group to sponsor an event, “Brain Aging and Memory:  What’s Normal?”  If you’ve wondered about your own memory or feel concerned about a family member or friend, please join us.  The event will be held from 2-4 pm at the Family Life Center at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church in Burnsville.  No registration is required and this event is free and open to the public.  You may find further details here.

I hope no one was unduly alarmed by the hurricane warning we posted in September.  It turned out that the storm veered much further west and we only ended up with several inches of rain.  Still, it prompted me for the first time to create a simple emergency kit and I’m glad I did.  Marilyn Cade also sent several excellent suggestions in case of an impending power outage:

1. Fill your bathtub/s with water.  It is an incredible help for days.

2. Consider a Life Straw for individual or family size. Our own Alison Hill is the vice president. They're good for years, and have been donated to developing countries.

3. You could also get a multi powered emergency radio (solar, hand crank). It will charge cell phones and has a LED flashlight.

Here is a link to emergency preparedness supplies to get you started.

Thank you for your continued support of MY Neighbors.
